In the 1936 Berlin Games, Jesse Owens rose to fame by winning four gold medals, defying the era’s racial prejudices. Abebe Bikila made history in the 1960 Rome Olympics by winning the marathon barefoot. Nadia Comaneci achieved the first perfect 10 in gymnastics at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. Florence Griffith Joyner, or “Flo-Jo,” became the fastest woman ever at the 1988 Seoul Games. The 1992 Barcelona Olympics saw the USA’s “Dream Team” dominate basketball. Michael Johnson claimed double gold in the 1996 Atlanta Games, while Cathy Freeman fulfilled her dream with a gold in the 400m at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Usain Bolt’s record-breaking sprints and Michael Phelps’ eight gold medals in the 2008 Beijing Olympics solidified their legacies as some of the greatest Olympians of all time.
