What if technology could do more than entertain — what if it could help someone feel like themselves again?
That’s exactly what happened for Stephen, a resident in aged care, who recently experienced something truly extraordinary. As part of the Continuing to be Me (C2bMe) mental health program delivered by Uniting, Stephen was given the chance to revisit his homeland of South Africa — not in person, but through the immersive power of virtual reality, powered by SilVR Adventures.
As he explored familiar landscapes and iconic landmarks, memories began to flood back. Stephen began sharing stories of his youth, reconnecting with long-forgotten emotions, and radiating joy. What made this moment even more powerful was hearing from his family — they told us he talked about the experience for weeks. It had reawakened something deep within him: pride, connection, identity.
“Alongside the regular program we have been engaged in, I’ve noticed a huge shift in Stephen’s positivity since incorporating VR into our sessions. Stephen was able to recall the experience up to 3-4 weeks after.”
– C2bMe Clinician
This is the heart of C2bMe: a program designed to support mental health and wellbeing for older Australians living in aged care. Delivered in partnership with SilVR Adventures and several PHNs, the program combines clinical expertise with innovative technology to foster hope, purpose, and connection — especially for those experiencing isolation, depression, or identity loss.
For Stephen, it wasn’t just a VR session. It was a powerful reminder of who he is, and the life he’s lived.
These are the stories that inspire us. And with more aged care homes embracing innovation through C2bMe, many more meaningful moments like this are yet to come.
