In a heartwarming example of innovation and community connection, Garden Village in Port Macquarie has made history by launching Australia’s first virtual reality (VR) intergenerational program — and the impact has been nothing short of extraordinary.

The program, Virtual Voyagers, was launched in partnership with Heritage Christian School and SilVR Adventures to coincide with Global Intergenerational Week. Over eight weeks, 10 seniors from Garden Village were paired with 10 students to embark on shared virtual journeys — exploring the world through immersive travel, followed by themed activities to deepen engagement.
But it wasn’t just about technology — it was about connection.

With the students stepping into the role of digital travel guides, the program became a powerful platform for leadership, empathy, and cross-generational friendship. As Jo McNamara, Communications and Community Engagement Manager at Garden Village, shared:
“We’re proud to lead the way in using technology to strengthen connections between generations.”
Co-created by Casey Baldwin, Founder of Intergen Connect, the program tapped into the power of storytelling and shared experience to bridge age gaps. “We’ve seen magic happen — stories shared, laughter across generations, and new friendships that will last beyond the headsets,” Baldwin said.

Each week brought new destinations and deeper bonds, with scenes of joy and surprise lighting up the room. Students learned life lessons from residents, while residents lit up with memories and emotions evoked by the shared adventures.
Powered by SilVR Adventures’ innovative VR solution — designed specifically for aged care — Virtual Voyagers has set a new standard for meaningful digital engagement in senior living.
Founder of SilVR Adventures, Colin Pudsey, praised the thoughtful implementation:
“This program aligns beautifully with our mission to bring joy and connection to older adults and across generations.”
The ripple effects of the program were far-reaching. Local businesses joined in as destination sponsors, and the Garden Village team showcased their approach at the Future of Business Technology Summit. What began as a small pilot soon gained national attention.
In May 2025, Garden Village was honoured with the Outstanding Community Organisation award at the Greater Port Macquarie Coastline Bank Business Excellence Awards. The judges praised the organisation’s commitment to social innovation, inclusivity, and its leadership in preparing for an ageing population.
Key to this recognition was the success of the intergenerational VR program — a shining example of how aged care can be both compassionate and future-focused.

As Garden Village now prepares to compete in the Regional Business Awards, their work stands as an inspiring blueprint for others. From VR to wellness programs, their initiatives are helping older adults age with purpose, dignity, and joy.
And with programs like Virtual Voyagers, they’ve proven that when you bring generations together — anything is possible.
