At Emmy Monash Aged Care, tradition and innovation go hand in hand. Located in the heart of Melbourne’s Jewish community, Emmy is renowned for its holistic care and award-winning lifestyle programs that enrich the lives of older adults. As part of its ongoing commitment to meaningful engagement, Emmy Monash partnered with SilVR Adventures to introduce immersive virtual reality (VR) experiences — and the results have been deeply moving.
On a recent visit, the SilVR team had the privilege of joining residents and staff for a day of exploration through VR — from the peaks of Machu Picchu to the vibrant cities of Europe. For many, it was more than just a journey — it was a reconnection to memories, people, and places they once loved or had only dreamed of visiting.
Debbie Jacobs, Culture and Wellbeing Manager at Emmy Monash, shared the inspiration behind bringing VR into the program.
“We were looking for innovative ways to stimulate and engage our residents — and virtual reality provided a perfect opportunity.” She added, “It allows people to revisit countries they once explored or see places they never had the chance to travel to.”
The emotional impact was immediate. One resident, moved to tears, recalled visiting a destination with her late husband. “She said it brought it all back,” Debbie reflected. “That moment reminded us why this technology matters — it’s not just travel, it’s connection.”
Lifestyle Coordinator Sarah has seen firsthand how VR opens new doors for residents. “Some of our residents have never travelled in their life, so this gives them a new sense of life. It’s truly changed their world — they look forward to each session like it’s an adventure.”
Residents echoed the sentiment. Mike described it as “just an amazing experience — I want to see more and more.” Helga appreciated how VR made inaccessible places like Machu Picchu feel possible, saying, “It creates an enormous opportunity for people who can’t travel.”

The technology itself has been embraced by the team. “It was easy to learn and fun to use,” said Sarah. “We had great instructions, and SilVR’s support is always quick and helpful.” Staff are now also exploring how VR can support wellbeing initiatives not just for residents, but for team members too.
Looking ahead, Emmy Monash plans to integrate more SilVR content, including music experiences and cognitive games. For Debbie, this is part of a broader mission: “Innovation in aged care keeps our residents connected to the world outside. VR brings that world to them — it’s powerful.”
Together, Emmy Monash and SilVR Adventures are proving that age is no barrier to exploration, joy, and meaningful connection. Through the lens of virtual reality, older adults are not only remembering the past but continuing to create beautiful new experiences every day.
