At St Vincent’s Care, the power of partnership, innovation, and community came together to deliver a truly ground breaking experience for its residents. SCVS is part of St Vincent’s Health Australia – one of Australia’s largest Catholic health and aged care providers, and thanks to the support of the St Vincent’s Foundation Queensland, Carina Leagues Club, and SilVR Adventures, residents are treated to captivating virtual reality (VR) experiences that whisk them away to the wonders of the world—right from the comfort of their aged care community.
This remarkable initiative not only highlights the transformative potential of VR technology but also underscores the importance of collaboration in enhancing the lives of older adults.
A New Horizon: Digital Horizons Takes Flight
The idea for the immersive VR program at St Vincent’s Care Carina began with a simple yet profound goal: reducing isolation and improving the well-being of residents. Greg Potent, Foundation Manager at St Vincent’s Foundation Queensland, explained the origins of the initiative:
“Back in 2023, a resident at Carina developed a program called Digital Horizons. The goal was to reduce isolation and improve well-being for those who don’t have the ability to get out much. After researching various options, we identified SilVR Adventures as the best program to achieve this and secured funding from Carina Leagues Club.“

With this innovative project, residents gained access to immersive travel experiences, allowing them to explore iconic destinations, rekindle cherished memories, and connect with others in entirely new ways.
A Partnership of Vision and Community
Nigel Stainer, Community Support Board Director at Carina Leagues Club, expressed his excitement about supporting the project:
“When I brought it to the board, they were keen to get involved in the pilot program. We’re extremely proud of this initiative and what it represents for our local community. Just watching the VR myself, having recently been to Italy, brought back so many memories. It’s astounding. At Carina Leagues Club, we’re proud to play a part in something that brings such joy and connection to residents.”
The collaboration between St Vincent’s Care Carina, St Vincent’s Foundation, Carina Leagues Club, and SilVR Adventures exemplifies the powerful outcomes that can be achieved when organizations unite for a shared purpose.
The Transformative Impact of VR
The VR project has proven to be a resounding success, with residents, staff, and families all praising its positive impact. Emily Ngoc Bich Duong, Living Support Manager at St Vincent’s Care Carina, shared:
“It’s been a really big success for our residents. They love how the tours are set up and have enjoyed every journey—whether it’s to Italy, India or Queensland. Every adventure has been amazing.”
Residents have been equally enthusiastic, expressing their awe at the immersive nature of VR. One resident reflected on her experiences:
“For myself, the furthest I’ve been is Tasmania. So, to experience the wonders of the world—Westminster Cathedral, Buckingham Palace, the caves in India—it’s all so marvellous. I’ve even found myself saying out loud, ‘Wow!’ It’s a privilege to have this opportunity.”
Another resident marvelled at the technology’s ability to transport them to new places while also addressing modern concerns:
“It’s a marvellous invention, out of this world. It saves a lot of pollution because you can see it without traveling. I hope this technology continues to progress, bringing joy to more people.”

Amplifying the Experience
A recent event went beyond the virtual, incorporating sensory elements to create a fully immersive Italian adventure. Residents enjoyed an Italian-themed afternoon tea and food that brought the sights, sounds, and even the smells of Italy to life.
“This is a must-have for seniors. I could even get the smell of the place,” said Anne, a delighted resident.
The seamless integration of VR with real-world experiences has not only enhanced resident engagement but also sparked meaningful conversations and connections among residents, staff, and families.

Looking Ahead: Expanding the Reach of VR
As the program continues to thrive, the potential for VR in aged care is becoming increasingly evident. There is already demand for expanding to more SVCS aged care facilities and implement similar programs.
Greg Potent highlighted the broader impact:
“The response has been overwhelmingly positive. We’ve had special guests and stakeholders see the benefits firsthand, and we’re already discussing how to expand this to other aged care facilities.”
Driving Innovation, Together
This partnership between St Vincent’s Care Carina and SilVR Adventures exemplifies how innovation, when paired with a commitment to community, can drive meaningful change. By leveraging VR technology, the program has not only enriched the lives of residents but also set a benchmark for what’s possible in aged care.
As these organizations continue to work together, the future is bright filled with opportunities to bring joy, connection, and purpose to even more residents.
Here’s to a partnership that’s changing the narrative for aged care and inspiring others to dream big.
